When it comes to straightening your teeth, you probably think of braces first. Maybe it’s the decades of (somewhat exaggerated) media and literature detailing the ordeal of wearing braces as a timid teenager or awkward adult. Since those days, orthodontics has advanced quite a bit, and now there are more dental correction options available to you. Invisalign is one of those options.
Invisalign is a plastic orthodontic product meant to be worn over your teeth to correct gaps between your teeth, crooked teeth, and misaligned teeth. Because these aligners made of custom-molded clear plastic, they’re practically invisible!
Clear aligners are different than braces and which one is right for you depends on a few factors. Invisalign, for example, tends to be slightly more expensive than traditional braces because they have to be custom made to fit into the specific shape of your biters. Invisalign is also the more flexible option. Unlike traditional braces, they can easily be removed and re-applied when needed. Because of this, treatment may also take longer than with traditional braces.
Invisalign may be a better option if you’re self-conscious about how braces may look, or if you engage in sports or other activities where you’d like to have the option to remove the corrective gear temporarily. Not all alignment problems can be corrected with Invisalign however, in some cases, metal braces may be required to achieve the desired results. If you’re curious about Invisalign, ask your orthodontist if its an option that could work for you.
